Daba Fall,
Senegal
Daba Fall is a young woman from Senegal. Her husband, the only income earner in the
family, became unemployed during the economic crisis of the 1980s. One day she realized
that the family had only 1000 F CFA (US$2) remaining. Daba decided to prepare a stew of
calves' feet and vegetables that she would sell at the bus station. Her family ate any leftover.
At the end of the day, Daba had made a profit of 100 percent. She continued making and
selling her soup for a few weeks, and when FDEA approached her, she had already saved
25,000 F CFA (US$50).
Daba received her first loan from FDEA and began to expand her business. After a few loans,
she opened her own restaurant at the bus stop. Daba has built her family a house, and is now
able to meet their needs.
